What Makes A Nursery Special For Your Child?

Updated: Dec 23, 2022

There are many things that can make a nursery special for your child. For some children, it may be the feeling of safety and security like a warm and loving home can provide. For others, it may be an opportunity to explore and discover new things in a stimulating environment.

And, for others, it may be the chance to socialise and interact with other children their own age. Whatever makes a nursery special for your child, one thing is certain: taking the time to create a nurturing and supportive environment for them to learn and grow in will pay dividends in their happiness and development throughout their growth, education and adult life. Here we have highlighted some of the things that can make a nursery stand out for you and your children.

What Makes A Nursery Special For Your Child?

Sound Reputation

A sound reputation is essential for any nursery and shows that they are well-trusted and provide quality care for children. Reputation is built over time through positive word-of-mouth and online reviews. A solid reputation offers parents peace of mind, knowing their child is in good hands.

Warm and Comforting Environment

A warm, secure and comforting environment in your nursery is important for a child's development. There are many ways to do this, but some key elements include:

A calming colour scheme in chill areas is good as they create a serene atmosphere for when children need to be calm and restful and bright and cheerful in areas where they are playing and learning.

Plenty of soft textures in furnishings and accessories, including, blankets, fluffy pillows, and rugs are all great choices and help to create a cosy area that your child will love spending time in.

Good lighting in areas where the children are learning is a positive thing whilst soft calm lighting in rest areas is good.

Happy, Relaxed Children

A nursery should be a place where your child feels happy and relaxed. It should be a place where they can feel comfortable exploring and playing. A good nursery will have staff that are patient and loving and who are able to create a warm and nurturing environment.

Your child will spend a lot of time at nursery, so it is important that you choose one that you feel confident in. Take some time to visit a few different nurseries, meet the staff, and see how your child interacts with them. You will know when you find the right one for your family.

A Good Range of Age-appropriate Activities

One of the most important things to look for in a nursery is a good range of age-appropriate activities. This will ensure that your child always has something to do and is never bored. It is also important to make sure that the activities are varied so that your child can try new things and explore different interests. When you visit a nursery look out for the different areas including, a reading area, a crafts area, a play area, a role play area, and different learning areas and you should look out for the children's work displayed around.

Passionate Teachers

One of the things that makes a nursery really special and memorable for your child is passionate teachers. When you have passionate teachers, they bring an extra level of excitement to the classroom and make learning more fun for everyone. Passionate teachers tend to be more engaged with their students and create a more positive learning environment. This can lead to better development, learning and a desire for your child to want to go to nursery.

Active Learning

Choosing the right nursery for your child is a really important decision. You want to ensure a nursery is a place where your child will feel safe, loved, and supported. It should be a place where they can learn and grow. A good nursery will have staff that are caring and experienced and they will also have plenty of activities for your child to enjoy and explore.

They will be happy and safe while they are there. With so many options available, it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. However, by considering all of the factors involved, you can choose the perfect nursery for your little one.

Child-Friendly Facilities

A good nursery will have plenty of child-friendly facilities for your little one to enjoy. This might include a soft play area, outdoor play equipment, and lots of toys and books. The environment should be safe and welcoming, with staff who are experienced in working with young children.

Another important factor to consider is the staff-to-child ratio. A good ratio ensures that each child gets plenty of individual attention and care. It's also important to choose a nursery that offers a flexible approach to childcare, so you can be sure your child's needs are always being met as well as them offering the childcare sessions that suit your needs.

When you talk to nurseries or visit them be sure to ask if they accept childcare vouchers and be specific about the company your employer uses to ensure you are able to use them. Good and professional nurseries will accept childcare vouchers and this will remove some of the financial pressures that are involved with your child attending a nursery.

Meals and Snacks

Ask what is included with your nursery fees, meals and snacks and good nurseries will also include nappies for babies and toddlers. Ask to see an example of their menus, how often they are reviewed/changed and where the food is prepared and then eaten by the children. A professional nursery will provide freshly prepared, nutritious meals that change on a regular basis.

Happy Parents

When it comes to finding the perfect nursery for your child, there are many factors to consider. The most important one, of course, is that you find a safe and secure environment where your little one can thrive. But beyond that, what else makes a good nursery?

For some parents, it’s important to find a nursery that has a strong educational focus, or maybe just a place where they are loved and cared for and for others its more about the social aspect for their children. They want their children to get a head start on learning and development, so they look for nurseries with experienced and qualified staff who can provide stimulation and guidance. Other parents prioritise finding a warm and nurturing environment where their child will feel happy and comfortable. This might be particularly important for parents who work long hours or have other commitments that mean they can not be at home as much as they would like.

Of course, every parent is different — and so are their priorities when it comes to choosing a nursery. But one thing that all parents want is peace of mind, knowing that their child is being well cared for and their child or children are happy whilst they are there. With so many excellent nurseries out there, you’re sure to find one that ticks all the boxes for you and your family.

A Special Nursery

A truly special nursery is one that focuses on the key development stages for a child, following the government's learning and development guidance as well as providing a secure, fun and caring environment. Every child who goes to nursery or pre-school should have a key carer who is responsible for documenting their progress, setting development goals and liaising with you as a parent. A good nursery will be open about you visiting them and asking them lots of questions, offering settling-in sessions for your child so they can get used to being away from you and you can get a feel for how happy they are.

About The Flowers Day Nursery

The Flowers Day Nursery in Swansea is an independent, family-owned, highly reputable nursery in Swansea that has been providing outstanding childcare in a family-focused environment since 2004. We offer the best daycare for babies right through to preschool age. Our whole team is committed to fun, engaging and learning play and all our childcare professionals are fully qualified with varied childcare experience and backgrounds.

Our beautiful four-storey Grade II listed building is bright, airy and spacious allowing us to have designated areas for the varying ages we care for and we are proud of the excellent care we provide to babies and children in Swansea. We have our own car park which makes drop off and pick up both quick and safe for you and your child.

Our Core Values & Beliefs

Our core beliefs are centred around teaching social skills, values, compassion, understanding and an appreciation of the world we live in. Children learn about the different cultures within our society at an early age and our qualified staff teach all learning following the Early Learning Years curriculum from the ages of 3-4 years, helping them to succeed in reception when they start primary school.

Working with Parents

At Flowers Day Nursery, we believe maintaining a close working relationship with parents and carers is vital to ensuring that every child reaches their full potential and flourishes in their early years.

It is difficult for both parents and children in the first few weeks after returning to work after maternity leave or when your child first starts with us, so we will support you with regular catch-ups and interactions. We offer taster sessions where they can stay with us and when they feel comfortable you can then leave them for the time you feel comfortable.

Flowers understands that their early years go quickly, and we work closely with you to ensure that your child feels loved, secure, learns, and has fun while they are with us.

Communication With Parents

From our baby room all the way to preschool, every child has their own key carer. Each day, your child's key carer will communicate development goals and successes to you and share a daily log with you.

We work closely with you as a parent or carer from our baby room through our Early Learning Years curriculum. Your child will have some wonderful experiences with us every day, inspiring them to be inquisitive, excited about life, and passionate about learning. Our goal is to provide them with memories that will last a lifetime.

Flexible Sessions Available

We are open from 7.30 am to 6.30 pm Monday to Friday which gives you early and late drop-off and pick-up options to suit your working hours or circumstances. We offer full or part-time options and childcare solutions to meet your individual needs.

Our Drop Off & Pick Up Service

We also provide pick-up and drop-off services for local schools, allowing you to work outside of school hours while knowing that we will always be there to take care of your child. When children first transition to school, many parents use our school pick-up and drop-off service since it offers a homely environment compared to breakfast and after-school clubs, which may be difficult for the younger children.

You can also find childcare for your child during the 6 week summer holidays when your child is at school with our summer school program. Children enjoy coming to summer school because it is fun and interactive, and they get to spend time with friends and make new ones.

Vouchers & Government Funding at The Flowers

Our facility accepts all major childcare vouchers and government funding, including the "30-hour scheme". You can choose between full-day and half-day sessions, either on a full-time or part-time basis.

We have set fees at a cost which provides exceptional value without compromising on us providing outstanding childcare.

The Flower’s Meals & Snacks

Our kitchen has a 5-Star Environmental Health Award and we offer nutritional and varied meals and snacks every day. You can choose if your child has breakfast, lunch and, or dinner with us and mealtime social interaction is a really important factor in your child’s development.

Our meals and snacks are at set times for each age group giving them routine and security in their day with us. Our food preparation, menu options and nutrition is a priority for us and we understand the importance of balanced and nutritious meals for all children. Our meals use fresh, quality ingredients, are freshly prepared and we are able to accommodate any specific dietary requirements.
