A Day At The Flowers Day Nursery

Updated: Dec 23, 2022

When your child first starts nursery it can be a difficult time not knowing what they are doing during the day as they’ve always been with you or with family up to this point in their life. Nursery and preschool is a great way for them to start to gain a bit of independence and get used to not being with you 100 percent of the time whilst still being in a loving, caring and nurturing environment.

At The Flowers, we offer flexible full-time or half-day sessions to suit you and your needs. Babies can start from the age of 3 months up until preschool age and then up to 8 years old in our before and after school holiday clubs where we drop off and collect from the schools in the local area. As well as term-time contracts.

Morning sessions – 7.30am-13.00pm

Afternoon sessions – 13.00pm-18.00pm

We have been open in Swansea since 2004 and our caring and professional team have a wealth of experience in childcare. All of our practitioners have a minimum of level 3 in Child care and early years education. They have all had training in safeguarding, food hygiene and first aid. So parents can feel at ease that their children are safe and well looked after.

We are located just outside Swansea City Centre in a beautiful Grade II listed building with our own parking facilities, ensuring when you drop off and pick up your children it is both safe and easy for you.

Our primary focus is to support your child’s emotional, social and academic development in a caring and home from home environment feeling safe and happy when they are with us.

We are open Monday to Friday from 7.30-18.00 except Bank Holidays and we are often able to help to support you with any additional childcare sessions as we understand your work commitments and plans can change at short notice.

We accept all of the major childcare vouchers and support local government funding schemes which can contribute to your childcare costs.

What is included in the cost of childcare at The Flowers?

The cost of our sessions includes freshly prepared meals and snacks from our 5 Star Environmental Health Awarded onsite kitchen.

Breakfast – Toast, cereal and milk.

Lunch – 2 Course meal. For example homemade vegetable soup and spaghetti Bolognese with fruit and yoghurt for dessert, with water for drink.

Tea – A light snack including finger foods such as houmous and vegetable sticks.

Snack – Breadsticks or oatcakes with some milk.

Water is offered throughout the day.

We include nappies with our baby care sessions as we understand this makes a huge difference when packing your child’s bag for the day. This is unique to The Flowers in Swansea.

Our team are focused on getting to know your child and we are committed to working alongside you to make sure they feel safe and secure and they are happy and fulfilled when they are with us.

The different areas and care within The Flowers are based on your child’s age, their needs and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. As they reach a certain age they progress through our dedicated rooms where the focus is based on age-appropriate play and learning following the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS) curriculum.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS) offers consistency and quality learning and care in all Early Years settings, providing a stable and secure foundation for learning for every child.

Our dedicated rooms at The Flowers Day Nursery all focus on the key stages of a child’s development:

· Communication and Language

· Physical Development

· Personal, Social and Emotional Development

· Literacy

· Mathematics

· Understanding the World

· Expressive Arts and Design

We provide to the children in our care a balanced routine of free choice and structured play activities that support their physical, emotional, intellectual and social development. Whilst encouraging independence and creativity.

Our experienced team plan all sessions with the Early Years Foundation Stage in mind whilst allowing children time to explore the world around them through play.

Rosebuds – 3-12 months and Sweetpeas 12-18months room.

Babies develop extremely fast and at 3 months they are really aware of the people, sounds, lights and objects around them. Their major development milestone in their first years include rolling over, sitting up, standing and possibly walking.

As they grow they will be listening, observing, feeling and reacting to the stimulations around them and as they become more mobile they will want to move around and touch and feel. Our baby rooms are set up to encourage all these developmental stages and they will build strong bonds with their key worker and the team around them.

We have a general routine for our dedicated baby rooms, however, it is very much dependent on the needs of your child and focused on them as an individual. Some babies need more sleep and rest than others at this stage so we are very much guided by you for their routine when they are with us.

The Flowers playroom and Creative Room.

When your child moves into our toddler room they will be enjoying new experiences through different activities. They will be beginning to understand more about the world around them and seizing new challenges and activities as their curiosity and coordination continues to develop.

They will begin to make their own decisions and our team encourages them to start being more independent as this builds their confidence and self-esteem. They will be really enjoying social interaction, building relationships with their friends and our team at this age. Their vocabulary will be developing at a speed and their self-expression and love of new activities will be clear to see.

This is a general guide to our days in the Playroom and Creative room, however, as with the baby room, it is always dependent on the needs of your child.

The Flowers Preschool/School Room

Our preschool room is more structured when it comes to the children’s day as this is the room where we support them to transition into starting school, it is, however still very much based on learning through play.

Our aim is to support your child’s development and for them to learn new skills in a more structured routine that prepared them for their first day at school.

The time in our Preschool room offers them opportunities to be more independent, allowing them to develop their literacy and numeracy skills whilst still learning through play and interactions with their friends and teachers.

We prepare them for their big adventure by allowing them to take on responsibilities during the day, it can take the form of a special task or it can be a challenging physical and mental task.

As we want the children to look forward to starting school and not to worry about it, and we talk to them about how their days will be similar once they start school. We also read lots of stories about going to school.

Often parents use our before and after school drop off and pick up services when they first start school as the children are familiar with us, feel comfortable with our team and it is a home from home environment compared to clubs at their new school. We drop off and pick up from local schools in the area.

The Flowers Toddler, Creative and Preschool Rooms overview.

The children are encouraged to come in and hang their coats and bags on their pegs. We encourage children to complete as many of their settling-in tasks themselves as possible to give them some independence.

We have carpet time twice a day, we greet the children and talk about what day and month it is, what the weather is like today and how we are feeling today. We also talk about any upcoming celebrations and ask them what they would like to do today.

We offer free play times so the children have the option to choose their learning and play both inside and outside. Each room is set up with activities that will help support the children’s development. We provide the children with structures and free play.

At snack time the children are able to choose from a healthy choice of snacks and they are taught about hygiene by washing their hands before mealtimes and tidying up after themselves.

Each child at The Flowers Day Nursery has a dedicated Key Worker, who will communicate with you about their milestones and development achievements. They will develop a close relationship with your child and work with them during their time with us. We monitor their development and see what areas they need support with to help them progress in their learning.

Our aim is to provide a wide range of different and stimulating experiences for every child who attends The Flowers and ensure they feel safe, happy and content with us.
